Hello, I'm your Independent Advisor for today. I know this can be frustrating, but don't worry. Image: Rawpixel. Microsoft, in one of its recent updates to Windows 10 , has changed the default behavior of the operating system, albeit in a minor way.
New personal computers running Windows 10 will arrive with the News and Interests feature on by default. Personally, with my previous PCs, I did not pay much attention to this feature, but that changed with my most recent laptop purchase. News and Interests is much as you would expect—a display of headlines from various sources highlighting the news of the day. It is in the system tray lower right-hand corner of the standard Windows 10 taskbar. The default icon represents current weather conditions in your local area.
When you hover over or click it depending on current settings , you will get a fly-out window of headlines, as shown in Figure A. So, of course, my first instinct was to turn the feature off, but on second thought, perhaps we can make it more useful with some configuration changes.
The settings for News and Interests in Windows 10 are in taskbar settings. Content will update throughout the day and keep you up to date. To switch between these two units, select the weather icon on the taskbar, select the Edit location and unit icon on the weather card, select Celsius or Fahrenheit on the weather, and select Save. To only show the weather icon and to save space on your taskbar, you can switch to icon only mode.
You can quickly glance at your feed by hovering your mouse on the weather icon. To turn this feature off, right-click a blank space on the taskbar, select News and interests and select Open on hover to clear the box. If you don't see this option in your menu, make sure you have the latest updates installed for your PC.
Taskbar updates show you personalized, rotating content directly on your taskbar, including news and more. You will also see the relevant information card in an expanded view in your feed. Once this is checked, you will only see weather on your taskbar.
Note: If you have an information card turned off, you will not see rotating taskbar updates related to that information card. When you turn off news and interests, the weather will no longer appear on your taskbar. You can manually update your primary location and language to see more relevant content.
Open news and interests on the taskbar, then open Settings. Select Location to set your primary location and see more relevant content for that location. This will also update the location used for weather on the taskbar. Select the Language and content dropdown menu to select an appropriate language for content in your feed.
